Embodied Cognition According to Tec ( Theory of Event Coding ) 1

چکیده
this book and of this chapter – embodied cognition – is not very well defined. Wilson (2002) has identified no less than six different meanings the concept has acquired in different writings, and this is arguably an underestimation. And yet, there certainly is quite some deal of overlap across approaches and authors, especially with regard to the shortcomings in cognitive theorizing that the concept is meant to overcome. As Wilson (2002, p. 625) summarizes,

The theory of event coding (TEC) as embodied-cognition framework
The concept of embodied cognition attracts enormous interest but neither is the concept particularly well-defined nor is the related research guided by systematic theorizing. To improve this situation the theory of event coding (TEC) is suggested as a suitable theoretical framework for theorizing about cognitive embodiment-which, however, presupposes giving up the anti-cognitivistic attitude in...

1 This is an extended version of the Opinion paper " The theory of event coding (TEC) as embodied-cognition framework " submitted to Frontiers in Cognition. 2 As common in the more lively phases of scientific disciplines, the key concept of this book and of this chapter—embodied cognition—is not very well defined. Wilson (2002) has identified no less than six different meanings the concept has ...
متن کاملThe TEC as a theory of embodied cognition
We argue that the strengths of the Theory of Event Coding (TEC) can usefully be applied to a wider scope of cognitive tasks, and tested by more diverse methodologies. When allied with a theory of conceptual representation such as Barsalou’s (1999a) perceptual symbol systems, and extended to data from eye-movement studies, the TEC has the potential to address the larger goals of an embodied view...
متن کاملTaking the grounding problem seriously
Cognitivistic approaches to human thought and behavior have been very successful in tracing, identifying, and analyzing the processes and mechanisms underlying human cognition. However, they have created and strengthened the image of humans as couch potatoes that have incredibly interesting thoughts and mental simulations but hardly translate any of those into real action. Moreover, the strateg...

Conceptual distinctions between perception, action, and cognition are convoluted in real world proceedings, as we meander through life, tied to past thoughts and actions, oriented toward future goals, guided by current perceptions. The research topic " Perception, Action, and Cognition " aimed to go beyond the already established perception-action links to study the role of cognitive mechanisms...
